Switching electricity supplier in Spain: free, fast, no new meter
If you take over a house or flat in Spain, you do not have to keep the existing electricity contract. Switching is easier than you might think.
The rules in brief
- Free of charge and no new meter.
- Duration: max. 10 working days, up to 15 if work on site is needed.
- The new supplier handles cancellation with the old one.
- Cancellation: households can cancel at any time. A penalty is only possible on fixed-price contracts before the first renewal, at most 5 % of the pending energy (per contract). Basis: RD 88/2026.
What you need
- Your CUPS (on every bill).
- Your contract details from the current bill (holder, power, tariff).
Check before switching
- Compare neutrally – ideally with the official electricity comparison of the Spanish regulator (CNMC), or first with our calculator.
- Check your power – if you switch anyway, choose a suitable contracted power (see Lowering your contracted power).
- Extra services (insurance, maintenance, assistance) – do you really need them?
- PVPC or free market – PVPC only from comercializadoras de referencia and only up to 10 kW; bono social only with PVPC (see PVPC or free market).
- First-year discounts – also look at the normal price afterwards.
- With solar – check compensation, surplus rate and possibly a virtual battery.
Solemo compares neutrally. We compare all tariffs by what they would really cost you.
