Understanding your Spanish electricity bill: every line explained

As of 11/2026 · Solemo

Spanish electricity bills look complicated at first. For homes up to 15 kW, however, they always follow the same structure, the 2.0TD tariff. Once you know the lines, you quickly see where you can save.

The key details at the top of the bill

  • Titular – the contract holder.
  • Supply point number (CUPS) – the fixed number of your electricity connection, shown on every bill (ES + 16 digits + 2 check letters, sometimes 2 more characters). You need it to switch supplier.
  • Peaje 2.0TD – the network tariff for connections up to 15 kW.
  • Periodo de facturación – billing period with dates and number of days.
  • Contracted power (potencia contratada) P1/P2 – your contracted power in kW.
  • Consumo Punta / Llano / Valle – your consumption in the three time bands.

The three time bands (mainland)

PeriodEnergy (consumption)
P1 Punta (peak)Mon–Fri 10–14 and 18–22 h
P2 Llano (standard)Mon–Fri 8–10, 14–18 and 22–24 h
P3 Valle (off-peak)0–8 h plus Saturday, Sunday, 6 January and fixed-date national holidays all day

Fixed-date national holidays 2026: 1 Jan, 6 Jan, 1 May, 15 Aug, 12 Oct, 1 Nov, 6 Dec, 8 Dec, 25 Dec. Not off-peak all day: Good Friday, regional and local holidays, and Monday substitute days (e.g. 2 Nov and 7 Dec 2026).

For power there are only two periods: P1 = Mon–Fri 8–24 h, P2 = the rest (nights, weekends, national holidays).

The bill lines

Término de potencia (power charge)

Fixed cost for the contracted power: kW × days × price. You pay it even if you use very little electricity – which is why the contracted power is worth checking (see Lowering your contracted power).

Término de energía (energy charge)

Your consumption in kWh × price – depending on the tariff one price for all hours or different prices per period.

Financiación bono social

A statutory contribution by all customers to fund the social tariff – a small amount per day (Iberdrola example: EUR 0.024688/day). It is not a discount, even though the words «bono social» appear.

Impuesto eléctrico (electricity tax, IEE)

Normally 5.11269632 % on power + energy, at least EUR 1/MWh. In 2026 a temporary 0.5 % applied from 22 March to 31 May. For December 2026 a reduced rate depends on a condition in RDL 25/2026 (open as of 11/2026).

Alquiler de equipos de medida (meter rental)

Single-phase smart meter EUR 0.81/month, three-phase EUR 1.15/month, both excluding VAT.

Servicios adicionales (extra services)

Insurance, maintenance or «asistencia» are optional add-on contracts, not part of the electricity supply, and can be cancelled. Check whether you really need them.

IVA (VAT)

21 % on everything, including electricity tax and meter rental. 10 % applied only temporarily from 22 March to 31 May 2026 for connections up to 10 kW. For November/December 2026, RDL 25/2026 provides 10 % only under a price condition; it is not met for November (so 21 %), December is open.

What is the same with every supplier

Part of every bill is set by the state: peajes (network tolls) and cargos (charges). They are identical for all suppliers. 2026 (toll + charge):

P1P2P3
Power, EUR/kW per year23.324952 + 4.3794610.443770 + 0.281653–
Energy, EUR/kWh0.033261 + 0.0642920.016409 + 0.0128580.000077 + 0.003215

So the difference between suppliers lies in the remaining energy and power price and in extra services.
